Apple Reportedly Developing Face ID-Enabled Doorbell Camera
Apple is expanding its smart home offerings with a doorbell camera that integrates Face ID technology and HomeKit compatibility.
Apple is reportedly advancing its smart home portfolio with the development of a new doorbell camera featuring Face ID technology. According to Bloomberg News’ Mark Gurman, the device is expected to enable users to unlock their doors seamlessly by scanning their faces, mirroring the functionality of Face ID on iPhones. This new product could debut by the end of next year.
The doorbell camera may work with third-party HomeKit-compatible smart locks, and Apple is also exploring partnerships with smart lock manufacturers to provide a comprehensive system at launch. The device is expected to integrate Apple’s proprietary “Proxima” Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, anticipated to be featured in updated HomePod Mini and Apple TV devices.
This announcement follows previous reports of Apple developing a device under the code name J490. This multifunctional product is expected to combine artificial intelligence, Siri integration, smart home functionalities, and a touch interface. Slated for an early 2025 release, the device aims to rival Amazon’s Echo products and Google’s Nest Hub, with features such as inter-room communication and centralized device management.
Industry experts believe these innovations indicate Apple’s broader ambitions to gain a stronger foothold in the competitive smart home market. By leveraging AI and user data analysis, Apple could enable more personalized experiences and targeted marketing through its smart devices.
Recent PYMNTS research underscores the growing reliance of consumers on connected devices in daily life, with many users multitasking across various activities. As the smart home ecosystem evolves, products like Apple’s forthcoming doorbell camera and J490 device could play pivotal roles in enhancing user convenience and connectivity.
