Apple Reportedly Developing Doorbell Camera with Face ID Technology
Apple’s new doorbell camera may feature Face ID and integrate with HomeKit smart locks.
Apple appears to be making its entry into the home security market with a doorbell camera equipped with Face ID technology. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this new device could launch as early as the end of next year. The doorbell camera is designed to use facial recognition to unlock doors, functioning similarly to the Face ID system on Apple’s iPhones.
The device will reportedly include Apple’s Secure Enclave chip, ensuring that Face ID information is processed and stored separately from the system’s main hardware. This security feature aligns with Apple’s commitment to user privacy across its devices. Furthermore, the doorbell camera is expected to integrate with third-party HomeKit smart locks, potentially providing a seamless experience for Apple users. Gurman also suggested that Apple might collaborate with a smart lock manufacturer to deliver a complete solution upon release.
Apple’s new product is rumored to utilize the company’s proprietary ‘Proxima’ Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, which is speculated to appear in other upcoming devices like the HomePod Mini and Apple TV in 2025. The doorbell camera would likely work within Apple’s HomeKit ecosystem, allowing users to control their smart home devices through the Home app.
This move signals Apple’s broader ambitions in the smart home industry. In addition to the doorbell camera, the company is reportedly exploring the development of other smart home devices, including a smart home camera, an Apple-branded TV, and a line of smart home displays. These displays may feature an iPad-like design that magnetically attaches to mounts or speaker bases, while others could be mounted on robotic arms for enhanced functionality.
However, entering the home security market comes with challenges. Apple must address potential security vulnerabilities to avoid risks that could harm its reputation. Earlier this year, Amazon-owned Ring faced significant backlash and a $5.6 million payout over security breaches, highlighting the stakes for any company venturing into this sector.
Apple’s efforts aim to combine cutting-edge technology with the trusted security measures users expect, setting the stage for its entry into the competitive smart home market.
