Apple unveils the new iPad mini with A17 Pro chip and Apple Intelligence integration

On October 15, 2024, Apple introduced its new iPad mini, featuring the powerful A17 Pro chip, a major upgrade from the previous generation. Available in blue, purple, starlight, and space gray, the iPad mini boasts a compact design with an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display and starts at $499 for the Wi-Fi model in the United States.

Powered by the A17 Pro chip, this iPad mini offers significant performance improvements. It features a 30% boost in CPU performance and a 25% increase in graphics capabilities compared to the prior version. With its 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU, the device enhances the experience for tasks like photo editing, augmented reality, and high-end gaming, while also supporting pro apps used by professionals in design, medicine, and other fields.

Apple has also added support for Apple Pencil Pro to the new iPad mini, enabling more advanced features for creative users. The Pencil’s haptic feedback, squeeze functionality for quick tool changes, and precision controls allow for a more intuitive creative process. This model also includes the standard Apple Pencil (USB-C) option for note-taking and sketching.

The iPad mini now supports faster connectivity with Wi-Fi 6E, delivering improved download speeds and performance. Cellular models support 5G networks and eSIM, making it easier for users to stay connected on the go in over 190 countries and regions. The USB-C port offers data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, making tasks like importing large files faster and more efficient.

The new iPad mini’s camera system also sees upgrades, with a 12MP wide back camera featuring Smart HDR 4 for enhanced photo quality and document scanning using machine learning. The 12MP Ultra Wide front-facing camera includes Center Stage, ensuring users stay centered during video calls.

iPadOS 18 brings further improvements to the user experience. New features like Smart Script in the Notes app make handwriting more legible, and enhanced capabilities for audio transcription, math note-solving, and widget customization provide a more versatile and personalized interface. The system’s new Control Center design offers easier access to frequently used functions.

Apple Intelligence, a key addition with the A17 Pro chip, leverages on-device and cloud-based generative AI models to provide users with features such as Writing Tools for text refinement, enhanced Siri functionality, and the ability to create customized photo memories. Apple has built in privacy protections to ensure user data remains secure.

Apple has committed to environmental sustainability with the iPad mini’s design, incorporating 100% recycled materials in its construction. As part of Apple’s larger goal to be carbon neutral across its entire product lifecycle by 2030, the device meets strict energy efficiency standards and uses recyclable packaging.

The new iPad mini will be available starting October 23, 2024, and can be pre-ordered from Apple in over 29 countries, including the U.S. Pricing for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model starts at $649. Education discounts are available, with prices starting at $449 for students and educators.
