Apple May Shift from Sony to Samsung Camera Sensors for iPhone 18

Apple has long relied on Sony’s camera sensors for its iPhones, but recent developments indicate a significant shift may be on the horizon. Industry rumors and leaks point towards Samsung stepping in as a supplier for Apple’s iPhone 18, set to release in 2026. This change could mark the end of Sony’s dominance in supplying CMOS image sensors to Apple.

According to reliable sources, including noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Samsung is developing a cutting-edge, three-layer stacked camera sensor. This sensor architecture features a Photodiode layer (PD) to capture light, a Transfer layer (TR) designed to minimize noise, and a Logic layer that manages computational photography. Notably, the introduction of a noise-reducing transfer layer is an innovation unique to Samsung’s approach.

Leakster @Jukanlosreve also highlighted that Samsung has formed a dedicated team to work with Apple, indicating the seriousness of this partnership. Samsung’s three-layer sensor is expected to significantly enhance camera performance for future iPhone models. Reports suggest the South Korean tech giant will supply a 1/2.6-inch 48MP ultra-wide CMOS sensor for at least one iPhone 18 variant, paving the way for a more advanced imaging experience.

In addition to changes in camera technology, the iPhone 18 series is rumored to bring a bezel-less display to the market, further evolving Apple’s design language. The goal is to create a seamless, edge-to-edge screen experience. There is also speculation about Apple exploring foldable phone technology for this series, signaling a potential leap in design innovation.
