Apple’s New Smart Display Aims to Redefine Home Control

Apple is reportedly working on a smart display featuring advanced sensors, homeOS, and robust home integration.

Rumors about Apple’s development of a smart display for home control are gaining momentum, with reports suggesting the company is working on two distinct models. Among them, one might feature a robotic arm and pay homage to the design of an iconic Mac.

According to Bloomberg, the entry-level device will boast a 6-inch square screen surrounded by advanced sensors, including a landscape-oriented FaceTime camera. These sensors will detect a person’s presence and proximity, dynamically adjusting the on-screen content. Additionally, the device will be capable of recognizing the number of people nearby.

Running on a new operating system called homeOS, the smart display will support video calling, smart home controls, and essential Apple apps like Notes, Safari, and Calendar. The user interface is expected to take inspiration from iOS widgets. Music functionality is central to the device, allowing it to manage playback on HomePod speakers across the home.

The device also integrates intercom capabilities, enabling FaceTime communication between rooms. It will provide access to live security footage from connected cameras, leveraging Apple’s HomeKit ecosystem to deliver a revamped control center. Despite its tablet-like design, the product is envisioned as a wall-mounted screen.

Internally codenamed J490, the device could debut in the first half of 2025. Apple is positioning it as a competitor to products like Google’s Nest Hub Max and Amazon Echo Hub, likely targeting a price range of around $250.

Siri and voice-first interactions will be pivotal, with enhanced Apple Intelligence and deeper app integration at the core of the offering. The device will also support Handoff, allowing seamless task transitions between screens. To enhance usability, Apple is reportedly developing various attachments, including wall mounts and speaker bases.

With a mix of smart home functionality, communication tools, and music integration, Apple’s upcoming smart display has the potential to redefine the way users interact with their living spaces.
