Apple Developing Face ID-Enabled Smart Doorbell Camera

Apple plans a smart doorbell with Face ID and HomeKit integration, set for a 2025 release.

Apple is expanding its presence in the smart home market with the development of a new doorbell camera. Expected to launch as early as late 2025, this device will feature Face ID recognition and advanced wireless technology, aiming to provide a seamless and secure way to access homes. This marks Apple’s first major foray into smart home security, challenging established brands like Ring.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the doorbell will allow users to unlock their doors simply by looking at the camera, thanks to Face ID integration. While the device itself won’t physically lock or unlock doors, it is designed to work with third-party smart locks that support Apple’s HomeKit. Additionally, it will enable users to unlock doors via their iPhones. Apple might bundle the doorbell with specific compatible smart locks, possibly requiring a dedicated security chip or protocol to ensure compatibility.

The doorbell is also rumored to include Apple’s upcoming Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless chip, which is expected to debut in other Apple products like new HomePods and Apple TVs in 2025. However, reports suggest that the doorbell might not carry Apple’s branding directly. Instead, it could be released under a partnering brand such as Belkin, a move that would allow Apple to mitigate potential risks to its reputation in case of any security issues.

This project is part of Apple’s broader strategy to expand its smart home ecosystem. The company is reportedly also working on other devices, including a smart display with robotic arm capabilities, enhanced HomePods, and potentially a dedicated security camera. By late 2025, Apple’s smart home lineup is expected to be significantly enriched, providing robust competition in the growing market.
