Apple’s Ambitious Move into Smart Home and Security Markets
Apple is gearing up for a major expansion in smart home tech, with new hardware set to launch in 2024.
In a significant development, Apple is set to make a major leap in the smart home technology sector, with rumors indicating new product launches early next year. The tech giant, which has been relatively quiet on this front, is reportedly working on a series of innovations to catch up with competitors like Amazon and Google, who have already established dominance in smart home ecosystems.
One of the most exciting new products in the pipeline is a wall-mounted smart home hub. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, this device is designed to serve as a centralized control point for various smart home functionalities. Unlike simply repurposing an iPad for wall use, this device is reportedly optimized for home automation, enabling users to control appliances, manage video calls, and utilize AI-driven app navigation. Codenamed J490, this smart hub is anticipated to launch as early as March 2024, with its design focusing on AI-powered widgets and HomeKit integration.
The device is expected to feature a roughly 6-inch square display, equipped with sensors to activate the screen upon detecting presence. This functionality resembles Amazon’s Echo Hub, making it a direct competitor in the growing market of smart home control panels. Siri voice commands and touch interactions will allow users to seamlessly control their HomeKit-enabled devices, and it is highly likely that this device will support Thread border routing and Matter protocol for enhanced compatibility.
Looking ahead, there are also reports of a premium version of this home hub with advanced features, including a robotic arm capable of adjusting the screen’s angle, although details on its availability remain sparse.
In addition to the smart home hub, Apple is rumored to be exploring the security camera market, a segment where it has previously relied on third-party manufacturers. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to introduce its own smart security camera, with mass production scheduled for 2026 and ambitious shipment targets in the tens of millions annually. While Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video framework already supports security devices from brands like Aqara and Logitech, a native Apple camera would allow the company to further streamline its smart home ecosystem.
This strategic push highlights Apple’s ongoing effort to tighten its ecosystem, providing users with more integrated and seamless control over their smart homes. By reducing reliance on third-party hardware, Apple aims to enhance the synergy between its products, thereby strengthening user loyalty within its “walled garden” of devices and services.
These developments suggest that Apple is preparing for a substantial presence in the smart home sector, a market currently dominated by its rivals.
