Apple Reportedly Developing Face ID-Enabled Video Doorbell

Apple is rumored to be developing a video doorbell leveraging Face ID and HomeKit integration.

Apple is reportedly expanding its smart home portfolio by developing a video doorbell that integrates with its ecosystem. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new product is expected to utilize Face ID technology to work seamlessly with HomeKit-enabled door locks, providing a high-tech solution for home security. This innovation would allow users to unlock their doors through facial recognition, much like how Face ID functions on iPhones.

The potential doorbell would position Apple against competitors such as Google Nest and Amazon Ring in the video doorbell market. While specific features of the doorbell are not yet confirmed, it is likely to include video capture capabilities, especially given Apple’s existing HomeKit Secure Video service. This service ensures footage is securely stored in iCloud with end-to-end encryption, aligning with Apple’s commitment to user privacy.

The development aligns with Apple’s broader smart home strategy, which reportedly includes a range of new devices. These include an updated Apple TV, a new HomePod, a 6-inch smart display, advanced AI-powered security cameras, and even exploratory projects like augmented reality projectors. Rumors suggest these devices may integrate into a new smart home operating system under development.

Additionally, the doorbell might incorporate a new Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip designed to enhance data security. However, Apple’s approach to door locks remains unclear. The company may collaborate with third-party HomeKit-enabled locks or introduce its own brand as part of an all-in-one solution.

While Gurman’s track record lends credibility to these rumors, Apple has not confirmed any release dates for these products. Some sources speculate that certain devices could debut as early as Spring.

This new addition to Apple’s smart home lineup, if launched, would further solidify the company’s position in the smart home technology market.
