Apple's Year-End Plans: Software Updates, New Features, and More

Apple prepares to wrap up 2024 with major software updates, new features, and surprises across its product lineup.

As 2024 nears its end, Apple remains active with significant software updates and additional initiatives planned before the year concludes. Key announcements include software release timelines, new features, and exciting developments across Apple’s product ecosystem.

Apple’s annual Black Friday-Cyber Monday promotion is expected to return next week. Last year in the U.S., the company offered gift cards worth up to $200 with select purchases. Customers can anticipate similar deals this year, alongside discounts from other retailers on Apple products.

In software updates, Apple has confirmed that iOS 18.2 will roll out on December 9. Alongside it, users will see the release of iPadOS 18.2, macOS Sequoia 15.2, watchOS 11.2, tvOS 18.2, visionOS 2.2, and HomePod Software 18.2. These updates bring a variety of features:

  • Apple Intelligence Enhancements: iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 introduce tools such as Genmoji for creating custom emojis, Image Playground for image generation, and ChatGPT integration for Siri. Visual Intelligence on iPhone 16 models will allow users to access information about their surroundings, like restaurant hours and reviews, using the camera.

  • Additional Features: iOS 18.2 adds a default apps section in settings and item location sharing in the Find My app, available for iPhone XS and newer models.

  • tvOS and visionOS Updates: tvOS 18.2 introduces a Snoopy-themed screen saver and ultra-wide 21:9 projector support. visionOS 2.2 enhances the Mac Virtual Display feature, offering an ultra-wide mode equivalent to two 5K displays side by side.

Following the December updates, Apple is expected to release beta versions for its next wave of software, including iOS 18.3 and related updates. These incremental updates, typically minor, will likely become available in January after a brief holiday pause.

Another highlight includes the anticipated arrival of next-generation CarPlay in the year’s final months. Originally previewed at WWDC 2022, Apple has integrated the feature into iOS 18.2, signaling its readiness for release.

As the year concludes, Apple is also celebrating 2024’s achievements. The company has unveiled the year’s most popular podcasts and curated Best of 2024 playlists on Apple Music. Upcoming announcements include year-end charts for apps, books, and more, alongside Apple Music’s Artist of the Year selection. Apple may even have surprises in store as 2024 draws to a close.
