Apple Brings Wallace & Gromit to Battersea Power Station with iPhone-Produced Stop-Motion Animation

The six-minute stop-motion animation features Wallace & Gromit and is projected onto Battersea Power Station this holiday season.

This holiday season, Apple is showcasing a unique stop-motion animation featuring Wallace & Gromit, projected onto the iconic Battersea Power Station in London. The six-minute animation, which will run daily from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. until New Year’s Eve, is part of Apple’s ongoing “Shot on iPhone” campaign. The best part? It’s free to watch, and no reservations are required.

Created by Aardman, the animation studio behind Wallace & Gromit, the project marks a significant achievement in filmmaking. The stop-motion video was filmed using the Telephoto camera on eight iPhone 16 Pro Max devices, leveraging the power of Apple’s latest technology. Aardman employed the Dragonframe Tether app to capture full 4K stills in ProRAW format, which were then stitched together to create a 6K image. This allowed the studio to turn the stop-motion characters, which are only 23 centimeters tall, into 101-meter tall projections on the side of Battersea Power Station.

The projection itself is an enchanting sight, as it transforms two towers of the power station into towering Christmas trees. Visitors will be able to watch as Wallace & Gromit decorate the trees, and then take a selfie in front of the fully adorned festive display.

Gavin Strange, the director and graphic design lead at Aardman, expressed his excitement about the project, calling it a “cinematic fusion of tech and art.” He added, “Shooting stop-motion animation on iPhone 16 Pro Max with the legendary Wallace & Gromit, to then be projected onto the iconic Battersea Power Station, makes this unique in so many ways.”

Apple’s U.K. headquarters and retail store are both located at Battersea Power Station, and the stop-motion set used to create the animation will be on display outside the store. More information about this special “Shot on iPhone” campaign, including an upcoming “Today at Apple” session with Aardman, can be found on Apple’s website. The campaign is also being promoted on Battersea Power Station’s website.
