At Last: A UWB Lock, a Matter-Compatible Ice Maker, and Other Smart Home Devices

In this episode of the HomeKit Insider Podcast, we discuss the latest smart home innovations, including the introduction of the world’s first Ultra-Wideband smart lock, a new Matter-compatible ice maker, and other smart home devices.

Upcoming Guest Appearance

Next week, ADT CTO Gilles Drieu will join the show to discuss various smart home topics. Listeners are encouraged to submit their questions by Friday, September 27, 2024.

Ultra-Wideband Smart Lock

U-tec has released its new Ultraloq model supporting Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. While it is compatible with Apple Home, it currently lacks the native auto-unlocking feature available in iOS 18. Instead, the auto-unlock functionality is supported through the U-tec app. A new version with full support for Apple Home auto-unlock is expected in 2025, along with compatibility with Aliro.

iOS 18 Update and Thread Devices

The iOS 18 update now allows direct control of Thread smart accessories from the iPhone without routing through a border router. This enhancement simplifies the management of Thread devices within the smart home ecosystem.

New Smart Home Products

  • Onvis Outdoor Motion Sensor: A new outdoor motion sensor with Thread support has been introduced. This is a valuable addition, given the limited options for outdoor sensors.
  • Govee Connected Ice Maker: Govee has launched a smart ice maker that can be controlled and monitored via the manufacturer’s app. It is expected to receive a Matter update soon, potentially allowing compatibility with the Apple Home app once Matter support expands to include refrigeration devices.

Find My Accessories from Rolling Square

Rolling Square has begun crowdfunding for two new accessories compatible with Apple’s Find My network—the AirNotch Pro and AirCard Pro. The AirCard Pro is designed for wallet tracking, while the AirNotch Pro is a more robust keychain attachment.

Sonos Product Rumors

There are new rumors regarding upcoming Sonos products, specifically the Arc Ultra and Sub 4, which could be released later this year.

Stay tuned for more smart home news and updates on future episodes of the HomeKit Insider Podcast.
