Highly desirable iPhone feature might finally become available, but not anytime soon
The iPhone 15 is set to introduce many new features for Apple, including the Dynamic Island, previously exclusive to the pro models. While some users prefer this design over the old ’notch,’ others have been hoping for a completely unblemished screen. According to reports from Korean outlet The Elec, Apple is considering incorporating an under-display camera (UDC) in future iPhones. The task of developing a camera with no visible hole that can still capture high-quality shots has been assigned to LG Innotek. This is a challenge faced by existing UDC phones, including those in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is a reason why foldable cameras lag behind traditional ones. Additionally, the UDC needs to support Face ID. LG Innotek is said to be working on a ‘Freeform Optic’ lens that consists of multiple lenses in a free curve shape, allowing for changes in lens thickness to allow more light. However, early samples have reportedly disappointed Apple, leading to speculation that it may take until the iPhone 19 in 2027 to achieve a truly smooth screen. While this information is not officially confirmed, it indicates Apple’s efforts to move away from the divisive Dynamic Island design. It remains to be seen if a foldable iPhone will be released before then.
