Apple's Anticipated Move: Under-Display Cameras for Future iPhones
Apple is reportedly considering under-display camera technology for future iPhones post-2026. The Dynamic Island, featured in the iPhone 14 Pro models and extended to all iPhone 15 variants, houses the Face ID camera and displays content. LG Innotek, the electronic component manufacturing arm of the LG Group, is working on an under-panel camera (UPC) system to address the light transmission issue faced by under-display cameras. LG Innotek’s solution utilizes ‘freeform optic’ lens technology to improve light transmission. The company has filed patents related to this technology since 2021. While under-display camera technology is already present in Chinese smartphones, Apple’s adoption of this technology may offer a unique perspective. However, iPhones with under-display cameras are not expected to be officially launched until after 2026. Apple’s exploration of this technology aligns with the broader trend of enhancing user experience and aesthetics in the smartphone industry.
