Apple Expands Smart Home Offerings with New Apple TV Features and Smart Devices

Apple’s latest updates include new Apple TV watch list, hidden Thread radios, and diverse smart home devices

In a recent episode of the HomeKit Insider Podcast, several new developments in Apple’s smart home ecosystem were discussed. Highlights include Apple’s new features on Apple TV, hidden Thread radios, and a range of new smart home products.

With the recent release of tvOS 18.1, Apple introduced a subtle yet significant change to the Apple TV app — a separate watch list feature. Unlike the “Up Next” queue, which includes all content, the new watch list focuses only on movies and shows the user hasn’t started watching. This helps users keep track of new content that may otherwise get lost amidst ongoing series.

In addition to the Apple TV update, Apple is preparing for the November 8th launch of new Mac models, which, according to FCC filings, include hidden Thread radios. Apple has not publicly commented on this inclusion, which enables enhanced connectivity with other Thread-enabled devices.

Also in the world of smart home advancements, TP-Link is soon launching the Tapo H110 IR repeater with Matter support. This device will allow users to control various IR devices via Apple’s Home app, automations, and Siri.

Several other products have also entered the market. The new Rise Garden 3 is a smart indoor garden system with an updated metal and wooden design, enabling year-round growth of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. LifX has released an extended set of permanent outdoor lights compatible with Matter over Wi-Fi, measuring 50 feet with 30 lights and expandable up to 200 feet. Additionally, CozyHome has introduced a HomeKit-compatible smart air vent that uses fans to improve airflow in rooms and can be controlled through the Home app.

The episode concluded by addressing a listener’s question on finding a robotic vacuum that meets specific criteria, showcasing the podcast’s engagement with listener queries.
