Apple iOS 18.1 Brings New Features and Fixes

Apple has introduced iOS 18.1, a significant update to its iPhone operating system, following the release of iOS 18.0.1 in October, which focused on bug fixes. This update introduces a variety of features and refinements to enhance the user experience for iPhone users worldwide, except in specific regions like the European Union and China.

Call Recording Feature

One of the standout features of iOS 18.1 is the ability to record phone calls. Once a call begins, users will notice a soundbar icon on the top-left corner of their screen. Tapping this initiates call recording, with an automated announcement informing both parties after a brief delay. The recordings are saved in the Notes app, and certain iPhone models, like the iPhone 14 Pro, can generate transcripts. However, users should verify local laws regarding call recording before using this feature.

Apple Intelligence Tools

iOS 18.1 brings advanced Apple Intelligence features to select devices, including the iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 series. These tools allow users to proofread and rewrite text, clean up photos, and use an upgraded Siri with improved conversational capabilities. Access to these features requires joining the Apple Intelligence waitlist through Settings.

While these tools are now available in certain regions, features like the AI-powered emoji generator “Genmoji” will be included in future updates.

Enhanced RCS Messaging and Business Communication

The update expands RCS messaging support to include Messages for Business, enabling smoother interactions between businesses and customers. Previously, this feature was limited to iMessage.

Adjustments in Control Center

iOS 18.1 further refines the revamped Control Center introduced in iOS 18. Connectivity settings, such as Wi-Fi and VPN, can now be added as independent controls, providing users greater flexibility. Additionally, users can reset the Control Center layout if needed. New tools like Level and Measure have also been added for practical utility during renovations.

Widgets on the home screen now reflect app tint settings, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic. The update also allows users to change or add a primary email address for their Apple ID directly through the settings menu.

Sleep Apnea Detection via Apple Watch

Apple Watch models paired with iPhones running iOS 18.1 can now detect sleep apnea, a feature approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. This enhancement highlights Apple’s focus on integrating health monitoring into its ecosystem.

Expanded Emoji Keyboard and Drag-and-Drop Features

The emoji keyboard has been expanded to include custom stickers and larger emoji. Additionally, users can now drag and drop files seamlessly between iPhones and MacBooks running compatible software.

Additional Fixes and Improvements

The update addresses various issues, including podcast playback glitches, video stuttering during playback, and problems with digital car keys. It also improves Game Center integration, App Store search, and more.
