Apple Introduces New Features in iOS 18.2 Public Beta
Apple’s latest iOS 18.2 public beta brings advanced AI features and user experience upgrades.
Apple released the second public beta of iOS 18.2 on November 12, one day after the third developer beta became available. The update follows the general release of iOS 18.1, which introduced new features and fixes for all iPhones while adding exclusive Apple Intelligence features for specific devices. The iOS 18.2 beta further expands these capabilities, offering AI-powered features for developers and beta testers and additional system upgrades accessible to all users.
AI-Enhanced Features
Users with iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, or iPhone 16 models can test exclusive AI functionalities, such as the Genmoji feature, which allows users to generate custom emojis based on descriptions. Another significant AI addition is Visual Intelligence, comparable to Google Lens, enabling object recognition, language translation, QR code scanning, and contact creation by pointing the camera at an object. The feature integrates with ChatGPT for enhanced functionality.
Image Playground, another AI-powered tool, lets users generate images from text prompts. It also allows integration of personal photos or sketches into creative visuals, broadening possibilities for creative expression.
Enhancements to Existing Apps
In the Mail app, Apple introduced new sorting categories akin to Gmail and Outlook, designed to organize emails into primary, promotional, and other folders. While useful, the feature sometimes misclassifies emails. Users can switch to the traditional list view if desired.
The Find My app now includes options to share item locations and display contact information, aiding the recovery of lost belongings. These updates are particularly relevant during travel-heavy periods.
Accessibility and Customization
The volume slider has returned to the lock screen in iOS 18.2, accessible through a setting under Accessibility. Additionally, users can now set a maximum volume limit to protect speaker integrity and reduce noise disturbances. This limit does not apply to calls or emergency alerts.
For iPhone 16 users, Apple introduced a new toggle allowing the camera to open with a single press of the Camera Control button, even when the screen is off. This adjustment offers convenience but may lead to accidental activations.
Siri and ChatGPT Collaboration
Apple Intelligence has transformed Siri’s interface with a glowing light animation during activation and ChatGPT integration. Users can request Siri to perform tasks like generating step-by-step guides, although Apple advises verifying the results for accuracy.
Future Expectations
While these features are already available to public beta testers, more changes could arrive before the official release of iOS 18.2. Apple has not announced a public launch date but previously hinted that more Apple Intelligence enhancements would debut in December. These advancements highlight Apple’s commitment to improving user experience and integrating cutting-edge AI technologies into its ecosystem.
