iPhone 16 Series: Leaks Reveal Larger Screen and Potential Ultra Model
While the iPhone 16 series is still at least ten months away, there have been numerous leaks. MacRumors recently published a summary of the iPhone 16 series’ potential hardware and design changes.
Larger screen: The iPhone 16 Pro will have a display measuring 6.27 inches (15.93 cm) (rounded to 6.3 inches (16 cm)), while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a display measuring 6.85 inches (17.4 cm) (rounded to 6.9 inches (ca. 18 cm)). The current model has a screen size of 6.1/6.7 inches.
Camera layout: The dual rear camera lenses on the base iPhone 16/16 Plus will most likely be reverted to a vertical layout, similar to the iPhone 12. This setting can be changed to enable the capture of Vision Pro spatial videos and photos.
Capture button: All new iPhone 16 series models will have a new button on the side that Apple internally refers to as the capture button, but it’s unclear what it does.
48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens: iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to include a 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, which allows for higher resolution and more detailed photos when taken in 0.5x mode.
Super telephoto camera: The iPhone 16 Pro Max may be Apple’s first phone to include an ultra-telephoto periscope camera, which increases optical zoom capabilities dramatically.
Wi-Fi 7: The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to support Wi-Fi 7 for simultaneous data transfer across the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands, enabling faster Wi-Fi speeds, lower latency, and other benefits.
The A18 Pro chip is expected to be manufactured using TSMC’s second-generation 3 nm process, known as the N3E process, for Apple’s next-generation A18 Pro chip.
5G Advanced: The iPhone 16 Pro may include a Qualcomm Snapdragon X75 modem that supports “5G Advanced” networks for faster, more power-efficient 5G connections.
5x optical zoom: Both iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to include 5x optical zoom, which is currently available only on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Apple may eventually include solid-state volume, power, and mute buttons in the 16 Pro models.
Microlens technology: The iPhone 16 OLED display panel is expected to use brighter microlens technology, as well as more energy-efficient materials.
Action buttons: It is expected that action buttons will be added to the base iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro models.
A17 chip: The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to include an A17 chip manufactured by TSMC’s N3E process.
AI features: Although iOS 18 is expected to include new Siri features powered by large language models, on-device AI features are expected to be limited to iPhone 16 models only.
Stacked Battery Technology: The iPhone 16 Pro models will include stacked battery technology, which will provide increased battery capacity and longer battery life.
Apple will also release an iPhone 16 “Ultra” model next year, which may include additional camera improvements, a larger display, and other features. Perhaps it will be released separately, or there will be a name change for the 16 Pro Max.
In terms of the iPhone 16 series, there have been some initial leaks mentioning features such as a full range of high-refresh rate screens and the possibility of the main camera using Sony’s IMX903 stacked CMOS. However, more information is needed to confirm these details.
It should be noted that the above information is preliminary and is only for reference purposes. Because the new iPhone is still in development, changes can occur at any time.
What enhancements and innovations do you anticipate for the iPhone 16 series? And, of course, iOS 18 will be released in June of next year, bringing exciting changes.
