Leaked Information: iPhone 16 Pro Models Might Feature a 48-Megapixel Ultra Wide-Angle Camera
Rumor has it that the iPhone 16 Pro models in 2024 could come equipped with a 48-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera. According to a user on Weibo named “Instant Digital” and a report from Macrumors.com, the new models may feature an ultra wide-angle lens and camera module with a 48-megapixel sensor. This upgrade is expected to result in higher resolution and better quality photos and videos, even in low-light conditions, which has been a challenge for wide-angle photography.
Currently, the Pro and Pro Max cameras on the iPhone 15 have a 48-megapixel sensor only on the main 24mm lens. If the rumors are true, the iPhone 16 would have two lens-and-camera modules capable of shooting 48-megapixel images, with the telephoto lens potentially getting the same upgrade in the iPhone 17.
In addition to the improved sensor, the new models may allow users to shoot in ProRaw format, which is Apple’s version of the RAW image file format. This format offers more data for editing purposes, providing greater control over the final image.
While megapixel count alone does not determine image quality, advancements in image-sensor technology, lens quality, and sensor size have all played significant roles in improving smartphone photography. Companies like Sony have made notable innovations in image sensors, such as the introduction of BSI CMOS sensors in 2009. Sony has also experimented with 1-inch image sensors, which have been incorporated into their compact cameras and smartphones, allowing for features like burst shooting, RAW recording, and high-quality video capture.
It remains to be seen how the integration of various technologies, both hardware and software, in the iPhone 16 Pro models will impact the overall image and video quality.
