No 5x Zoom for iPhone 17, But Major Upgrades Expected for iPhone 18
Camera, display, and chip improvements shape the future of Apple’s iPhones.
Apple’s next-generation iPhones continue to generate buzz as new leaks shed light on developments for the iPhone 17, expected in September 2025, and the iPhone 18, slated for 2026. According to reports, potential buyers might want to hold off for the iPhone 18, as significant upgrades are anticipated.
Recent information from South Korea’s The Elec highlights preparations by Apple’s camera module suppliers for the iPhone 17 Pro. However, the standard iPhone 17 and its rumored variants, the iPhone 17 Air (or iPhone 17 Slim), are unlikely to include periscope lenses. Without this feature, the 5x optical zoom present in the Pro and Pro Max models will not extend to these versions. Current iPhone 16 models, with their dual-lens systems featuring a 48MP main sensor and a 12MP ultrawide camera, lack optical zoom capabilities—suggesting a similar limitation for next year’s standard models.
Meanwhile, display technology is set for a leap with the iPhone 18 series, as tipped by established leaker @Jukanlosreve. The introduction of LTPO+ display technology could bring further efficiency and performance improvements, advancing dynamic refresh rates and power-saving capabilities. While specifics on the “plus” iteration of LTPO remain scarce, the anticipated enhancements could make the display a standout feature for the iPhone 18 lineup.
Chip advancements also appear to favor the iPhone 18. Chinese source Fixed Focus Digital, citing @Jukanlosreve, reports that the A19 chips for the iPhone 17 won’t see major upgrades. However, the iPhone 18’s A20 chips could offer substantial improvements, potentially involving Intel in their development. A collaboration with Intel, alongside Apple’s established partnership with TSMC, might mark a pivotal shift in processor manufacturing.
These developments point to a future where the iPhone 18 becomes a compelling choice for those seeking the latest in camera, display, and chip technology. For now, prospective buyers have much to consider as Apple continues to refine its flagship devices.
