Apple May Keep Periscope Cameras Exclusive to Pro Models in iPhone 17 Lineup
Reports suggest the iPhone 17 Pro models will feature LG Innotek’s upgraded periscope cameras, leaving standard models without this advanced technology.
Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 lineup is generating buzz, especially around its camera technology. According to a recent report from South Korea’s The Elec, the periscope telephoto cameras—currently exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro models—are expected to remain a Pro-only feature in the iPhone 17 series. LG Innotek, the supplier of these cameras, has announced an investment of KRW 375.9 billion to upgrade its facilities, meeting Apple’s demands for enhanced camera modules in the upcoming iPhones.
While the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will benefit from the advanced periscope technology, it remains uncertain whether Apple will increase the camera count on its standard iPhone 17 models or retain the existing dual-camera setup. Regardless, the standard models are unlikely to receive periscope functionality, suggesting a continued focus on differentiating the Pro lineup.
Apple’s investments and strategy extend beyond camera technology. Reports indicate the company is planning four flagship iPhone models for next year, potentially including a new “Air” or “Slim” model to replace the current Plus variant. If realized, the lineup could feature the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air/Slim, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Notably, the rumored Air model is expected to be Apple’s thinnest iPhone yet, measuring around 6mm thick, and may debut Apple’s in-house 5G modem.
The investment by LG Innotek reflects Apple’s continued push for innovation in its Pro series while maintaining a clear distinction between standard and Pro models. As the iPhone 17 launch approaches, further details about the new lineup and its features are anticipated, continuing to shape expectations for Apple’s next-generation devices.
