Leaked Image Reveals iPhone 17’s New Centered Camera Bump Design

A leaked image from the supply chain hints at a new camera bump layout for the iPhone 17, likely making the design more stable.

A new leak from a Chinese Weibo user offers a glimpse into the upcoming iPhone 17’s potential redesign, suggesting a shift in the phone’s iconic camera bump. The leak includes an image of the phone’s frame, which shows a new centered camera island. The user, who claims the frame is from the iPhone 17 supply chain, wrote that the ultra-wide camera has been moved to the center, likely to make space for a front-facing structured light sensor.

This design change appears to affect more than just the rumored iPhone 17 Air, a slimmed-down version of the phone expected to be just 6mm thick. The frame shown in the image is noticeably thicker, and the new slim model reportedly won’t feature an ultra-wide camera. This suggests the leak could be referencing a different, more advanced iPhone 17 model.

One of the most significant design changes here is the camera bump itself. Traditionally, iPhones have placed the camera array in the upper-left corner of the back panel, a layout that has remained consistent since the original iPhone. This new design, however, would place the cameras in a large, rectangular island that extends across the phone’s back, marking a notable departure from past designs.

This shift in the camera bump’s placement makes practical sense. With iPhones today, the protruding camera bumps often lead to wobbling when placed flat on a surface. A centered bump that spans a larger area would provide more stability, preventing the phone from rocking when used on a desk. It could also address issues with wireless charging stands, where alignment with the charging pad can be hit or miss due to the irregular shape of the current bumps.

The iPhone 17 is expected to be released in September 2025, with more design details likely to surface in the coming months. For now, this leak gives us the first clear indication of what Apple’s next flagship might look like.
