iPhone 17 Pro to Feature Horizontal Camera Island and New Spatial Video Capabilities

Leaks hint at a major redesign for iPhone 17 Pro’s rear camera and possible immersive video features.

Although the iPhone 17 series won’t be officially released until 2025, early leaks are already providing valuable insights into the design changes we can expect, particularly with the rear camera setup on the iPhone 17 Pro.

One of the most significant rumored changes is the introduction of a new camera island design. According to sources from China, Apple is planning to adopt a horizontal, pill-shaped cutout for the camera module, similar to the design seen in Google’s Pixel phones. This change is believed to accommodate not just the camera sensors, but also Face ID components, which could be integrated into the rear design. Leaked images from Weibo show a metal frame for the iPhone 17 Pro, featuring a central camera bump with a possible slot for what might be the “front structure light”—potentially a reference to the Face ID sensors.

In addition to this redesigned camera module, there are rumors about a feature referred to as “space video.” While details are still unclear, this could signify new spatial video capabilities, offering users a more immersive and dynamic way to capture and view content. This innovation could transform how users interact with their devices, especially for those who seek a more engaging video experience.

The new camera island design has also been corroborated by another reliable source, Digital Chat Station, who suggests that this horizontal layout might not be exclusive to Apple. Android manufacturers are reportedly planning to adopt similar designs in future models. The leaked images show a horizontally stacked camera array at the top of the phone’s rear, which is notably larger than the squarish bump found on the iPhone 16 series, signaling a shift in smartphone design trends.

Expected to launch in September 2025, the iPhone 17 series will likely feature multiple variants, including the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and possibly a slimmer version called the iPhone 17 Air. As the release date approaches, more leaks and information are likely to emerge, providing a clearer picture of the innovations Apple has in store for its next-generation flagship smartphones.
