Apple to Introduce Variable Aperture Camera in iPhone 18, Reports Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo
iPhone 18 expected to feature major camera upgrade with variable aperture for enhanced photography
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple plans a major upgrade for the iPhone 18 camera, expected to release in 2026. The flagship model’s main rear camera will feature a variable aperture lens for the first time, marking a significant leap forward in mobile photography.
Kuo, in his latest industry insights, indicates that Apple’s primary shutter supplier for this upgrade will be Sunny Optical, with Luxshare as a secondary source. This variable aperture lens technology will be developed with support from Largan Precision as the initial supplier.
Previously, reports suggested that the variable aperture would appear in at least one iPhone 17 model slated for release next year. However, Kuo’s new findings imply this enhancement is now set for the high-end iPhone 18 models instead.
A variable aperture will allow the iPhone 18’s camera to adjust its lens opening, optimizing light intake and providing superior control over depth of field and performance across varied lighting conditions. Such a feature is expected to deliver notable improvements in low-light photography, catering to photography enthusiasts and professionals alike.
