Apple's Next Camera Innovations: iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 Upgrades Detailed
Anticipated camera advancements for iPhone 17 and 18 models include higher megapixels and variable aperture on high-end models.
Apple is reportedly planning significant camera upgrades for its upcoming iPhone models, with new details emerging about enhancements for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 series. According to recent leaks, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are expected to feature 48MP telephoto lenses, while the entire iPhone 17 lineup could benefit from improved 24MP front-facing cameras.
However, for the iPhone 18 lineup, Apple might shift its focus from increasing megapixels to enhancing the aperture. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently reported that the “high-end” models of the iPhone 18 series – likely the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max – will be equipped with a variable aperture in the main camera, allowing users to control how much light enters the sensor. This feature can improve low-light photography by letting in more light when needed and offer more control over depth-of-field, creating blurred backgrounds without relying on software-based effects. Kuo emphasized that this adjustment could “significantly” enhance the user experience, potentially marking a major leap forward for iPhone photography.
This technology isn’t entirely new in the smartphone market. Samsung first introduced variable-aperture cameras in 2018 with the Galaxy S9 and later the Galaxy S10 models, though the feature was discontinued in later models. More recently, Xiaomi has integrated variable aperture technology in the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, achieving remarkable low-light performance, as noted in reviews.
While details on Apple’s camera plans are still preliminary, Kuo’s record on Apple leaks lends weight to this report. If accurate, these upgrades would position the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max as strong contenders in smartphone photography, leveraging both hardware innovation and enhanced control for photography enthusiasts.
