Development Begins on iPhone with Under-Display Camera Technology
Apple’s Korean suppliers are developing smartphone under-display cameras (UDC) for the first “all-screen” iPhone. LG Innotek is working on the UDC, which is placed under the display and does not create a visible hole in the panel when the camera is not in use. The UDC delivers less light to the image sensor compared to a typical front camera module, which can impact image quality and brightness. To address this, LG Innotek is developing a special “freeform optic” multiple lens system to reduce optical aberrations and improve image quality. LG Display, an affiliate of LG Innotek, is also working on UDC development. Apple is expected to adopt under-panel Face ID technology in the 2025 iPhone model before implementing UDC in the 2027 “Pro” iPhone models.
