Apple Initiates Service Program for Camera Issue on iPhone 14 Plus Models
Apple addresses camera preview issue for select iPhone 14 Plus devices manufactured in 2023.
Apple has launched a service program to address a rear-camera preview issue impacting a “very small percentage” of iPhone 14 Plus units produced between April 10, 2023, and April 28, 2023. Users with affected devices experience a bug preventing them from viewing a live preview through the rear camera, an inconvenience for photography enthusiasts.
This is the first time since 2021 that Apple has introduced a service program for an iPhone, the last being for an audio issue on the iPhone 12. Apple has previously addressed screen problems with the iPhone 11, freezing issues with the iPhone 8, a ‘No Service’ error on the iPhone 7, and power issues on the iPhone 6s.
To check if an iPhone 14 Plus is eligible for repair, Apple has provided a serial number checker on its website. Users can find their device’s serial number by opening Settings, selecting ‘General,’ and then ‘About.’ Eligible devices can be serviced by Apple Authorized Service Providers, Apple Retail Stores, or by mailing them to the Apple Repair Center.
Apple clarified that this repair program does not extend the standard warranty for the device. However, if users previously paid to repair this specific camera preview bug, they can request a refund. The service program will remain active for three years following the device’s initial retail sale.
The introduction of the free repair option will likely be welcomed by users, but the long-term future of the iPhone Plus line remains uncertain. Originally developed as a replacement for the iPhone mini range, the Plus series has reportedly faced lukewarm demand. While the iPhone 14 Plus outlasted the mini with a third generation, reports suggest Apple may discontinue the Plus line, potentially replacing it with an iPhone 17 Slim model featuring a more compact 6.6-inch display and a higher MSRP.
