Apple May Switch to Samsung Image Sensor for iPhone 18, Potentially Introducing a 500MP Camera

A leak suggests Apple could use a Samsung three-layer stacked image sensor for the iPhone 18, improving processing, color accuracy, and dynamic range.

A recent leak suggests that Apple might transition from Sony image sensors to Samsung’s advanced three-layer stacked image sensor for its 2026 iPhone lineup. If true, this shift could enhance processing speed, color accuracy, and dynamic range while also paving the way for a potential 500-megapixel camera.

For years, Apple’s iPhones have been known for their high-quality cameras that prioritize user-friendly shooting experiences over sheer megapixel count. However, changes may be coming. In July 2024, renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that Apple could switch to Samsung sensors for the iPhone 18 models. Now, another source supports this claim.

Social media user Jukanlosreve recently shared information suggesting that Samsung is actively developing a three-layer stacked image sensor tailored for Apple’s iPhones launching in 2026. According to a report from 91Mobiles, this new sensor is said to be more advanced than Sony’s Exmor RS and could potentially become the main sensor for the iPhone 18 series.

The report does not clarify whether the new sensor will be implemented across all iPhone 18 models or reserved exclusively for the Pro variants. However, given Apple’s history, major camera upgrades typically debut on the Pro models first.

The leaked details also indicate that the sensor might adopt a PD-TR-Logic configuration, stacking three chips to serve different functions. This advancement could significantly enhance processing efficiency, resulting in faster capture speeds, improved dynamic range, and superior color reproduction.

In addition to Apple’s rumored sensor upgrade, the leaker also claimed that Samsung is simultaneously developing a 500-megapixel sensor for its own Galaxy devices, hinting at fierce competition in smartphone camera technology.

While these reports remain speculative, the possibility of Apple integrating Samsung’s advanced imaging technology in future iPhones is an intriguing development. With the iPhone 18 release still over a year away, time will tell if these predictions materialize.
