LG Innotek Testing In-Display Camera Technology for Apple

LG Innotek is developing an under panel camera (UPC) for smartphones, in which the camera lens is not visible on the screen. This technology aims to create a “full screen” effect and increase immersion. However, one challenge with UPC is that the camera’s position under the display can result in less light absorption, leading to lower resolution images and slower consecutive shots. To overcome this, LG Innotek is developing a special lens called prism optic, which allows for control of lens thickness and reduces optical aberration. It is worth noting that while LG Innotek’s UPC technology is likely intended for Apple, it does not necessarily mean that Apple will implement UPC in its iPhones in the near future. LG Display, a sister company of LG Innotek, is also working on its own UPC technology, using transparent material for the front camera location. Samsung has already started implementing UPC in its foldable smartphones, but the camera resolution is lower compared to conventional smartphones.
