LG Innotek to Invest $268 Million in Camera Module Facilities Ahead of iPhone 17 Launch
The investment aims to enhance LG Innotek’s competitiveness for the iPhone 17’s upgraded camera technology.
South Korea’s LG Innotek has announced plans to invest ₩3.75 billion ($268 million USD) into expanding its camera module division by the end of 2025. This strategic investment is focused on improving the company’s competitiveness and supporting new product models, likely in preparation for Apple’s next flagship, the iPhone 17. The upcoming iPhone 17 is expected to feature enhancements to its camera modules, although changes to camera specifications are not anticipated to be major, with the iPhone 17 Pro models continuing to include the advanced folded zoom technology seen in the iPhone 16 Pro.
Despite holding the largest market share for iPhone camera modules, LG Innotek does not need to increase its production capacity. Instead, the investment is likely to be directed towards upgrading its equipment to accommodate the higher-spec camera requirements anticipated for the iPhone 17 series. According to LG Innotek’s CEO Moon Hyuk-soo, the company already secured sufficient production capacity by 2023, and its current efforts are centered on improving the performance of its camera modules.
As the leading supplier of camera modules for Apple, LG Innotek competes with other suppliers such as Foxconn and Cowell. Apple continues to work with multiple suppliers to secure the best possible pricing and terms for its components. Rumors also suggest that the iPhone 17 may introduce a thinner design, potentially signaling some of the most significant changes to the iPhone lineup in recent years. However, it remains to be seen whether Apple will fully integrate its anticipated AI-powered Apple Intelligence or whether features like Siri will continue to evolve over time.
