Apple Introduces the 2024 iMac with M4 Chip and Improved Features
The new iMac offers enhanced performance, updated display, and upgraded AI tools, while maintaining familiar design.
Apple has unveiled its latest 2024 iMac model, featuring updates that bring enhanced processing capabilities and improved hardware while retaining the familiar 24-inch, all-in-one design. The device now includes Apple’s M4 chip, succeeding the M3 with a focus on increased CPU performance, graphics enhancements, and AI functionality.
The 2024 iMac maintains a 4480 x 2520 resolution display and allows configurations of up to 32GB of RAM and 2TB of storage, similar to its predecessor. However, this year’s model introduces several key updates: the M4 chip provides a notable boost in performance, supporting daily tasks and intensive applications, with Apple claiming the new processor makes the iMac up to 1.7 times faster for productivity and up to 2 times faster for demanding tasks such as photo editing and gaming when compared to the 2021 M1 iMac. Compared to Intel-based models, the 2024 version boasts up to six times the speed.
A 12MP webcam replaces the previous 1080p camera, ensuring higher-quality video calls and streaming capabilities. The iMac now also supports up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports, doubling the connectivity options offered in previous models. Entry-level models begin at $1299, including an M4 chip with 8 CPU cores, 8-core graphics, 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and two Thunderbolt/USB4 ports. For those requiring higher specs, a $1499 version offers a 10-core CPU and 10-core graphics, along with four Thunderbolt 4 ports. Memory upgrades to 24GB and 32GB are available, though each step comes at an additional cost, reflecting Apple’s pricing strategy for high-end customizations.
Storage can also be upgraded, with options ranging from 512GB to 2TB, with costs scaling from $200 to $800. This flexibility allows users to tailor storage based on their requirements, albeit at a premium price.
The new iMac ships with macOS Sequoia 15.1, making it the first model to feature Apple Intelligence tools directly out of the box. These tools include advanced features such as Writing Tools for proofing and rewriting text, a next-generation Siri with improved natural language processing, enhanced search functionalities within the Photos app, and Priority Messages in the Mail app. Notably, macOS Sequoia 15.1 is compatible with all Macs featuring an M1 chip or later, providing access to these new software tools without requiring a hardware upgrade.
The device retains its compact design, measuring 547 x 461 x 147mm (21.5″ x 18.1″ x 5.8″) and weighing under 10 pounds. Standard features include a 3.5mm audio jack, three “studio-quality” microphones, six speakers, WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and optional Gigabit Ethernet on models with two Thunderbolt ports (standard on four-port models). The iMac comes bundled with Apple’s Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse, with options for a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad, as well as a Magic TrackPad for added flexibility.
Through these refinements, Apple’s latest iMac balances performance upgrades and continuity, offering a versatile and powerful option for users while maintaining a focus on connectivity and design that has characterized the iMac line.
