Pearla 2.1 Brings Open Gate and Log Video Recording to iPhone
The latest update introduces professional cinema features like S-Log3 and N-Log for iPhone filmmakers.
Pearla, the innovative camera app from House of Mars, has released version 2.1, bringing professional-grade cinema features to all iPhone models running iOS 17 and above. The update introduces open-gate shooting and log video recording, including support for Sony’s S-Log3 and Nikon’s N-Log color profiles. These advancements provide iPhone filmmakers with new tools to enhance their creative projects. Additionally, Pearla’s baked-in film simulations can now be applied to video recordings, expanding the app’s utility for creative professionals.
Guy Cassidy, founder of House of Mars, emphasized the app’s pioneering approach to leveraging iPhone hardware for professional photography and filmmaking. “When we launched Pearla, we went directly to the camera sensor and implemented our own photo development pipeline. Now we’re doing the same for video,” Cassidy explained. The new update positions Pearla as a robust alternative to built-in iPhone capabilities, enabling even entry-level iPhones, like the iPhone SE, to shoot 4K, Open Gate, ProRes 422 video calibrated to match Sony S-Log3 footage.
A recent demonstration compared Pearla’s S-Log3 profile with the Apple Log available on the iPhone 16 Pro. While Pearla’s footage appeared darker by roughly a stop, it showcased impressive results, suggesting strong potential for integration into professional workflows. This comparison raises questions about whether Pearla fully unlocks the iPhone’s log video capabilities or operates within the camera’s standard dynamic range with a flat curve. Nevertheless, the output is visually compelling and suitable for professional cinematic projects.
As Apple continues enhancing native video functionality in its devices, third-party developers like House of Mars are pushing the boundaries of hardware capabilities. Pearla 2.1 is set to be available in January, promising a powerful, portable solution for both photographers and filmmakers. The app’s recent updates also deliver expanded controls and features for photographers, maintaining its reputation as a versatile tool for creative professionals.
