Apple introduces spatial video support for Vision Pro headset in latest iPhone update

Apple has released a new iPhone update, iOS 17.2, which includes support for recording spatial video. This feature is designed to be used with Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro headset, which is set to launch early next year. The update allows users to capture spatial video if they have the latest iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max models. The feature utilizes two cameras on the iPhone to gather depth information and other data, enabling the videos to be viewed in three dimensions when using the headset. However, the videos themselves will appear normal when viewed on the iPhone in two dimensions. Users can start recording spatial videos now to build a library for viewing with the Vision Pro headset. It’s worth noting that this feature has a limitation on the framerate and resolution of the captured videos, with a maximum of 30 frames per second and 1080p quality, compared to the usual maximum of 60 frames per second and 4K quality for normal videos. To enable the spatial video recording, users need to go to the Settings app and navigate to the camera options, where they will find a “spatial” option alongside the normal video settings. Apple advises users to ensure that subjects are positioned at the appropriate distance from the camera, between three and eight feet, to accurately capture depth perception. They also recommend balanced and consistent lighting for clear subject visibility and keeping the phone steady while recording.
